Arts, Briefly: A Night at the Opera in Times Square
The sirens and other orchestral sounds singular to Times Square will have some competition on Monday night. The Metropolitan Opera’s opening-night gala performance of Puccini’s “Tosca,” which begins at 6:30 p.m., will be transmitted onto multiple screens in Times Square and to a large screen at Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza. The new production, with Karita Mattila, Marcelo Álvarez and George Gagnidze, will be conducted by James Levine. Admission to the Lincoln Center screening is free, but tickets are required. The Times Square relay of the performance, to be carried live on the Panasonic, Reuters/Nasdaq and MTV screens, is also free, no tickets needed. Approximately 2,000 seats will be available there for the public first come first served, with additional standing room provided. The premiere of “Tosca” will also be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio, Sirius Channel 78 and XM Channel 79, and streamed live on the Met’s Web site, metopera.org. The Met began outdoor transmissions of its opening in 2006 as part of a series of audience initiatives begun by Peter Gelb, the company’s general manager, and Mr. Levine, its music director.
